This being a Lucio Fulci movie, i obviously expected to see a ton of graphic violence and i did, but he didn’t offer just some cool bloody western with this film. Actually it was much more than just that. The film was brutal, it was sad, it was beautiful. It had some many excellent moments all throughout it and the score was brilliant and completely set the tone for the film. This was a very emotional picture and it seems to be a really personal from Fulci. It really had some moments that were truly heart breaking, these characters were totally likable. And to see what the characters went through, you really felt bad. I think that this film could definitely go as far as being one of the greatest spaghetti westerns that i’d ever seen. And that comes from a great genre with a ton of great pictures under it’s belt. If you’re a fan of Fulci’s but have not seen this you’ll most likely be very pleasantly surprised as i was. Two thumbs up!

Owing to the fact that i am a huge Fulci fan i was very excited about seeing Four of the apocalypse. I have enjoyed a wide spectrum of his movies including the beyond, conquest, house by the cemetary, city of the living dead, new york ripper, contraband, lizard in a womans skin, dont torture a duckling etc etc.

Unfortunately with four of the apocalypse,i was very disappointed. The acting is good and im a fan of Fabio Testi but the pace is slow and plodding, the soundtrack awful and there is very little of Fulcis signature violence to speak of !

Worth a look but for Fulci completists only, I would certainly recommend renting this first before you buy it !

I watched the series previously before I bought the umd but I recommend this to any anime fan who would like to watch a little anime on the run. The episodes are fantastic. The show is a rich mixture of horror, action and a little comedy. I don’t recommend this show for children because of language and content but for everyone else BUY IT! Also check out the manga if you love the show.

My rating refers to the movie - not the DVD.

Had I rated this product 1 star (which would be a generous rating for the DVD,) I’d be sending the message that this isn’t a good movie…5 stars for Bergman’s work.

MGM’s WAR OF OAR:

A lot of word has spread about MGM’s DVD releases of this film and Bergman’s “Shame” being presented in the wrong aspect ratios.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hour of the Wolf! Click Here

Here are the facts and my personal experience with this mess:

The original aspect ratio (OAR) of this movie and “Shame” is 1.37:1 (this has been confirmed by Svenska Filminstitutet,) i.e. almost full screen on a “normal” TV, but not quite; there should be BARELY NOTICEABLE black bars both above and below the picture.

However, in February 2004 MGM released a boxed set including five Bergman titles, where the two earlier mentioned films were presented in aspect ratio 1.66:1.

“How can you change the OAR?” you might ask. In this case the answer is simple: by matting the picture. MGM had placed very thick black bars on the top and bottom of the picture throughout the movie, resulting in a wider looking format, but causing 11.5% of the image to be blocked out. Through this link you can read all about it, and compare still images from these films to how they look on the DVD, and how they should look:

http://207.136.67.23/film/DVDCompare2/mgm.htm

Naturally this flub upset people, and eventually MGM had to admit their wrongdoing and withdraw these two DVD’s from the market.

This is the statement that MGM Home Entertainment made regarding the recall of the INGMAR BERGMAN COLLECTION:

“It has come to our attention that the transfers utilized for the release of Ingmar Bergman’s “Hour of the Wolf” Special Edition DVD and “Shame” Special Edition DVD are not representative of the intended theatrical presentation.

In order to provide customers with the best quality product available, we are recalling the product at retail and will be releasing both films in a 1:37:1 aspect ratio on April 20, 2004.

The Ingmar Bergman DVD Collection will also be available on that date. MGM Home Entertainment always strives to provide the highest standard of product and customer care. For additional information or comments, please contact our customer service.”

Reading this statement a year ago made me happy that I hadn’t ordered or bought the boxed set or any separate discs thereof. The DVD’s were now going to be withdrawn from the market and later re-released in the OAR…fine.

However, when these discs were re-released on April 20th 2004 they were presented in 1.33:1, NOT in the OAR 1.37:1, as MGM had promised.

I waited some months thinking that maybe some other studio (like Criterion) would release these movies in the OAR. Nothing happened, and naturally MGM wasn’t going to admit a second mistake, so since I hadn’t seen these movies, but had heard and read good things and was therefore curious, I ordered MGM’s 1.33:1 versions of both “Shame” and “Hour of the Wolf” from amazon.com in the early fall of 2004.

When the discs arrived “Shame” was slightly matted just as I’d expected (1.33:1,) but I got the 1.66:1 version of “Hour of the Wolf” even though I’d contacted amazon.com’s costumer service in advance to make sure that I would NOT get the edition that was supposed to have been taken off the market 6 months ago by then.

I complained to amazon.com, and instead of sending me the edition I wanted they gave me a refund - better than nothing, but they couldn’t tell me how to get a hold of the 1.33:1 edition of “Hour of the Wolf,” so neither can I.

Just be aware - there is no such thing as a widescreen edition of this film, even though the more expensive edition of the two MGM DVD’s available on amazon.com suggests so.

Ok, that about that. Some may suggest that this kind of technical mumbo-jumbo is not interesting and certainly not necessary when reviewing a movie, but whether you claim you care or not, watching 88.5% of the image of a movie WILL (consciously or subconsciously) effect your judgement of the film, because things are happening behind those thick black bars. Not presenting Sven Nykvist’s camera art as he and the director intended it is quite disrespectful towards both the artist and the audience.

…my suggestion is to MAKE SURE you get the 1.33:1 edition of the(se) film(s,) or wait until someone releases them in OAR 1.37:1.

DVD FEATURES:

There is a 26 minute “featurette” featuring short interviews (shot in 2002) with actors Liv Ullmann and Erland Josephson, Ingmar Bergman biographer Marc Gervais, and short footage from an approximately 35 year old interview with Ingmar Bergman. There’s no behind-the scenes footage or outtakes featured in the so called documentary; a lot of it is just repeated on-camera quotes, still pictures and a great amount of clips from the film, cut together at MGM studios. Nothing worth celebrating, though it’s viewable - they could easily have cut it down to less than 10 minutes, thus made it more intense, while still as interesting.

Marc Gervais’ comments and commentary is not very insightful or based on a lot of facts around the production of the movie - he merely suggests his own interpretations of what Bergman was trying to tell based on his own theories, which aren’t very interesting, and which don’t always make sense in comparison to Bergman’s autobiographical suggestions. Frankly, if I may be a tad harsh, I’d be as interested in listening to George W. Bush’s analysis of this picture as Mr. Gervais’.

Criterion’s Bergman Biographer, Peter Cowie, who has met the director several times, usually provides much more interesting commentary.

Other features on this disc (at least the matted edition) include English, French and Spanish Language subtitles, a photo gallery, and a theatrical trailer.

THE MOVIE:

“Vargtimmen,” which is the Swedish (original) title of “The Hour of the Wolf” is a black and white production from 1968, written and made in Swedish by director Ingmar Bergman. It is one of Bergman’s most “mystical” films, and of all his work, “Hour of the Wolf” suites best in the genre of “horror,” though it isn’t a pure horror flick from beginning to end - at least not in any typical sense.

The two main characters are played by Max von Sydow (as Johan Borg) and Liv Ullmann (as Johan’s pregnant wife Alma.) During most of the shooting of this film–which incidentally (as many other films since “Såsom i en spegel” a.k.a. “Through a Glass Darkly”) took place on Bergman’s residence Fårö–Liv Ullmann was in fact pregnant, at the time carrying her and the director’s child Linn.

Basically (bluntly, or on the surface) the film tells the story of a sleepless artist with an unhealthy upbringing, who is trying to fight off haunting demons. One may theorize these demons partly as a portrayal of critics towards the artist.

Bergman has never explained exactly why certain things take certain actions in his films. Usually he doesn’t even discuss the scripts with the actors. Partly for this reason, has he never been interested in recording audio commentary for his films on DVD, nor do I believe there is reason for him to do so, because his films are his creations - his art. There is no apparent reason to me why anyone should try to “figure these movies out” and make official theories and statements of what exactly they are trying to tell you, because sometimes they might not even be trying to tell you anything. This form of art, like other forms of art, should (as they do) leave you space for a personal interpretation.

Most of the cast (with exceptions like Naima Wifstrand) were, at the time, basically just stage actors - a fact that certainly effects the intense outcome of all characters featured in the movie and makes it special.

The music in several scenes of this film (such as when Johan Borg, on a fishing trip, is bothered by a demon in the form of a child) is very intense, effective and skilfully applied to the picture.

This is a work of art that a true fan of Ingmar Bergman’s filmmaking must not miss.

A famous painter, Johan (Max von Sydow), and his wife (Liv Ullmann) arrive on a small island where Johan plans to recollect his thoughts and find himself in his painting. He suffers from insomnia and bad nerves, and his nights are spent waiting in horror for the magical hour before dawn, the hour of the wolf, when a flood of memories, anxieties, and regrets transcend thoughts and appear as demonic apparitions which threaten to consume him. Johan’s wife, Alma, must help him overcome his dangerous obsessions with his ghosts before the manifestations become too real, and its too late…

The Magician and Hour of the Wolf are my two favorite Bergman movies — the reason being the flaws of these films only make them stronger by serving the point. In the Magician its an artist’s fear of having his cheap trickery exposed for what it is, and his inability to make “pure” art. The fact that Bergman had to sell the film as an “erotic comedy” with a silly subplot doesn’t make the film weaker: it just reinforces it with irony.

In the same way, the Hour of the Wolf was clearly made by a nervous and overworked artist: at this point the critics were out for blood with Bergman, ready to declare his career over and his movies indulgent exercises in his popular image. Bergman himself was having a rough time, with a theatre and a film career exhausting him and his marriage falling to pieces. But for Hour of the Wolf, any resignation, nervousness, or indulgence merely serves to strengthen the film’s message. Hour of the Wolf is a desperate film, and because of that, I think its in this film that Bergman comes closest to his own artistic vision: That place where dreams, memories, and anxieties come together and become indistinguishible (something he would have a harder time conveying in films like Face to Face).

The film is beautifully made, with Sven Nykvist collaborating as usual. Bergman and his cohort were cutting close to perfect in craft around this period. The flood of images is overwhelming. Some favorite scenes: Johan struggling with a small boy while fishing, the dinner party (the pressure!), and of course, the famous “Magic Flute” scene, with the small puppet moving almost imperceptibly as a real man. And that prevalent Bergman talking point, Mozart, and the chorus’ breathless chanting: “Pamin-na still lives.” (lit. “Love still lives”)

An emotional and personal film, one of his best.

This is a great little comedy, kind of a musical with lots of laughs, catchy songs, and some classic scenes. Lee Marvin is very deserving of his Oscar, as scene stealer Kid Shelleen. This drunken gun slinger manages to miss the broad side of a barn. Jane Fonda is great as the revenge seeking Cat Balou. “The face of an angel, fights like the devil.”

However, the real treat of this film is the pair of wandering minstrels. Stubby Kaye (Nicely Nicely in Guys and Dolls) strums around with Nat “King” Cole providing a lovely soundtrack. Their performance really makes this movie work, and moves it beyond a western parody.

The late Lee Marvin was a very versatile actor, as demonstrated in this motion picture. He much deserved the academy award for his dual role, playing both the alcoholic gunman, Kid Shelleen, and the evil gunman who is his opponent. He said later that it was a fun role that did not take much of his time.

The story is set during the time of the railroad robber barons. They acquired needed right-of-ways by whatever means. When Cat’s father is killed by the railroad’s hired gun, she hires Kid Shelleen, sight unseen, and has to get him into shape. They dispense their own form of justice, but the law is on the side of the railroad. The motion picture has many memorable scenes that will stick in your memory.

Lee Marvin’s performance made this a classic motion picture. Jane Fonda plays Cat, but without Lee it might have been a so-so film.

This is where the show starts to get even more interesting. We find the character Light continuing to play the role of “god of the new world,” ending the lives of the people he deems evil and unworthy of life. Light continues to write names in the Death Note, with the genius detective L hot on his trail. Light stays sharp so that he can eliminate L, keep his grades up, and keep Ryuk from going into withdrawal by feeding him apples. The show begins to start getting much more interesting in Volume 3 with Light entering college and L begins to keep an even closer watch on Light. More importantly, the revelation of another Death God coming to Earth with a second Death Note. The Death God not only gives the second Kira a Death Note, but they also provide a nice pair of Shinigami eyes to the owner allowing them to see everyone’s name and lifespan by just looking at their face. What will this mean for Light?

I really enjoy this series. What would you do if you had the power to kill people just by picturing them in your head and then writing their name in a notebook? Would you do it, even if it meant eternal damnation? This is the power given to a high school student who uses it to “create an ideal world”. But the laws of man cannot be ignore. A police force stumped calls in the greatest detective of their time, a man known simply as “L”. “L” has never failed to solve a case, but can he catch a killer who never has contact with his victims. Can a high school student continue to kill without leaving any evidence? Watch and find out.

If you or your friends have active children, they will love the way this series teaches. My friends children are mimicking and repeating the songs and dances and the letters perfectly and with understanding of the visual meanings, as well as some of the words. Very well produced product.

The details of new DVD editions of the three classic classic Indiana Jones movies with all-new special features have been announced. They’ll be available separately for the first time on DVD, or as a set. They were previously only available on DVD as a set.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark! Click Here

The new releases will coincide with the new movie, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which comes out on May 22nd. They’ll have new special features designed to introduce new Indy fans to the old movies, and to introduce old fans to the new movie.

The Indiana Jones movies are George Lucas’s recreation/update of the serialized adventures of the 1930s and ’40s. The first three were made in the ’80s and set in the ’30s. They feature Harrison Ford as a mild-mannered archeology professor who moonlights as an adventurous seeker of priceless antiquities. This takes him to exotic locations across the world, and gets him in some very tight spots of the kind that only a movie hero could get into, or out of. He invariably finds himself opposed by dangerous men with evil plans for the powerful objects only he has the skills to recover. There are elaborate set pieces with creepy critters, ancient traps, fights with weapons from bare hands to airplanes and tanks, and sometimes supernatural forces. Along the way Jones manages to have some romance too.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark! Click Here

Raiders was the first in the series. In 1936, having barely survived an unsuccessful attempt to find (OK) and bring home (whoops!) an ancient idol from Peru, Indiana Jones is recruited in a race against the Nazis to recover the Ark of the Covenant (yes, the one mentioned in the Bible, but with lots of added mythology), which is reputed to have the power to make an army invincible. The ark is located in the Well of Souls somewhere in Egypt; the key to the exact location is a medallion located, naturally, in a seedy lodge/bar in Nepal, in the possession of Indy’s ex-lover. All kinds of sparks fly, literal and metaphorical, as the pair, joined by another confederate in Egypt, use their knowledge of ancient myth and sheer bravado to work right under the noses of the Nazis to find the ark and remove it to safety. Almost. There are several reversals along the way, close escapes, a huge near-finale, and icky stuff–spiders and, especially, snakes, thousands of them, of which Indy unfortunately has a bit of a phobia.

Some of the more memorable moments are tinged with humor, if not outright hilarity. Indy’s reactions make the snakes as amusing as they are scary. We see how to fight an expert swordsman, if you’re in a hurry. The way the Nazis got a copy of (half) the medallion is painfully funny. The fate of the ark is a wry comment on Washington bureaucracy.

Raiders was an instant classic. I’m sure there are people who don’t like it, but I’ve never met any. It’s fine for most kids (PG violence and mild sexuality), and it’s plenty smart enough for all but the most snooty adults.

The original title is just Raiders of the Lost Ark, which is preserved in the movie itself. The longer title makes it easier to market as part of the franchise.

If you just want Raiders and don’t want to wait until May, you could get a used copy of the old Raiders DVD (people sell them out of the sets). The difference is in the extra features. The bonuses from the old set are on their own disc, so what you get when you buy just the old Raiders DVD is pretty bare. The new release, on the other hand, has the following, all new:

– “Raiders of the Lost Ark: An Introduction” by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas

– “Indiana Jones: An Appreciation,” in which the cast and crew of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull pay tribute to the original trilogy

– “The Melting Face,” a recreation of the famous effect from the climactic scene that certainly left an impression on me (was new then), with Spielberg and Lucas on the evolution of visual effects and CGI

– storyboards for “The Well of Souls” sequence

– DVD galleries of illustrations, props, production stills and portraits, FX/Industrial Light and Magic stuff, and promotion/marketing materials

– “Lego Indiana Jones,” a demo and trailer for a game based on the trilogy

If you like a few extras, you’ll probably like this new DVD, though maybe not enough to upgrade from the old one, or to wait until May. I like audio commentaries, myself, and since they’re easy to produce and tend to bring out points not covered in other features, I subtract one star for a special edition without any, but I look forward to the rest. If you don’t care about commentaries, this may be a five-star DVD for you.

There have been rumors of deleted scenes, but none are included.

Some will want to wait for a high-def release, which may make sense if you have the equipment or plan to get it. Many speculate that a Blu-ray release will come out for Christmas, but that’s guesswork.

There’s also some speculation that an edition with all four movies will be released for Christmas. They may bundle the four together, but I doubt that there will be a better edition of this movie soon, if ever, on standard DVD. Keep in mind that the previous set came out over four years ago, and if not for the new movie, that would probably be the only release during the decade of standard DVD. The next upgrade may be high-def only, and may not happen for a while.

If you do want the whole trilogy (highly recommended), the new set is here, the old set is here. If you want to pick up one of the others from the new set, the new edition of Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is here, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade here.

I was in college when Raiders came out. There was great anticipation because of the people associated with it, after the great success of Star Wars. A bunch of us went to the old full-size theater downtown to see the premiere, waited outside for hours. We weren’t disappointed. It was a wild, gripping ride from beginning to end, lots of excitement, good characters, clever moments for comic relief, and romance. More memorable than some entire semesters!

This tape is a must have if you are an Indiana Jones fan. Loads of great behind the scenes footage, along with clips of cut footage like Indy’s fight with the swordsman (Harrison Ford wasn’t feeling well, so they just had Indy shoot him). The tape is actually two specials, the first being about old movie stunts and how they relate to Raiders and stuntmen. Its got great footage and interviews with the stuntmen, and it’s hosted by Ford. The second special is just about the making of Raiders with interviews of alot of crew members and the actors and directors. This tape is highly recommended!

I am SOOO HAPPY this is finally being released on DVD (my VHS copy has been watched so many times, it’s not that good anymore!).

This is a great story about TWO sets of twins that are born in this rinky dink hospital in Jupiter Hollow, only to have one twin from each set mixed with the other. It’s a hilarious romp and definitely a feel good movie. I think far too many critics these days miss that point. If a movie makes you feel good and makes you want to watch it over and over again, that’s a 5 star movie.

Big Business will keep you coming back for a great does of monkey business!! Viva Tomlin and Midler!!

One set of twins (Lily Tomlin) born to West Virginians gets separated with other set of twins (Bette Midler) born to NYC snobs. Yes, no one noticed the obvious hair color differences but it really doesn’t matter. Both Tomlin and Midler go relentless getting laughs and it does work great. Especially the displaced country Bette Midler (who was supposed to grow up rich) and the country Lily Tomlin (who is where she is supposed to be). So many lines that you’ll find yourself repeating them and the ending is such a great sight gag. Hopefully this will be available again and on DVD at that? Oh my god, it’s me with a bad haircut.

The third season of Charlie’s Angels, which aired on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on ABC from September 1978 through May 1979, had a lot going for it, as well as a lot to live up to. The first season exploded onto television and immediately became a Nielsen ratings champ. Thanks to tweaked writing and a better timeslot, the second season was an even greater success, despite losing the angel who became a cultural phenomenon, Farrah Fawcett’s “Jill Munroe.”

Buy,Download, Or Stream Charlie’s Angels - The Complete Third Season! Click Here

One unique aspect of the third season is that it has the distinction of being the first (and only) season to have all three angels returning from the previous one-Cheryl Ladd as “Kris Munroe” who replaced Farrah, in addition to original angels “Sabrina Duncan” and “Kelley Garret,” played by Kate Jackson and Jaclyn Smith respectively. Additionally, Farrah’s contractual return for three episodes this season was another asset for the returning show. Her Townsend Associates homecoming alone caused enough media hype to potentially catapult the ratings even higher than before as everyone was curious to see how the former angel would come back into the fold with her younger sister and former colleagues. Not to mention that this season was filled with plenty of guest appearances including Dean Martin, Dick Sargent, Nancy Parsons, Anne Francis, Casey Kasem, and an up-and-coming young actress by the name of Jamie Lee Curtis. So with all of these factors going for it, this season should have been nothing less than stellar.

Well, that wasn’t quite the case. I think that the actresses, along with faithful sidekick “Bosley,” played perfectly by the late David Doyle, performed to the best of their abilities, given the material. The real problem is that by the time the third season began, the producers/creators thought that the show was infallible given its immense popularity and record-setting ratings, and this arrogance on their behalf lead to a creative decline mostly due to inferior writing. One particular writer became quite lazy with his scripts, and a pattern begins to emerge in his scripted episodes: they lack any real depth and tend to be built around one good central idea that isn’t fleshed out enough for an entire episode. Examples of these episodes include: ANGELS BELONG IN HEAVEN, ANGELS ON VACATION, MARATHON ANGELS, ANGEL ON HIGH, and TERROR ON SKIS, the latter of which he admittedly wrote because his wife wanted to go on a skiing vacation!?! The initial ideas for these episodes are good, but the episodes as a whole don’t match the calibur of earlier Angel outings.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Charlie’s Angels - The Complete Third Season! Click Here

Since Charlie’s Angels is more episodic (meaning that the storylines are limited to the duration of an episode) than serial (where storylines last several episodes or even an entire season), it’s better to have a diverse mix of writers and directors so that they can bring their own creativity to the show, thus giving it a fresh, ever-evolving feel. Consequently, the season’s highlights are when guest writers contributed scripts: COUNTERFEIT ANGELS is an original episode that uses Charlie’s anonymity against him when a man disguises his voice to impersonate Charlie and send his “evil angels” out to do his bidding; Jill’s return in ANGEL COME HOME has a well-developed story that naturally involves all 4 angels as they work together to discover who sent the phony emergency cablegram that brought Jill back from racing in Europe; and another bright spot in the season, and series, is the classic ANGELS IN SPRINGTIME where the Angels infiltrate a women’s spa to solve the murder of a famous actress and find her missing memoirs. This episode is loaded with fun, from short shorts to frigid adversaries to faking hypnotism, and this episode boasts one of the best villains: Zora the hefty physical therapist who uses her might against little Kris during a rough confrontation.

As for the DVD set, there’s nothing in the form of “special features,” but for me the show itself is worth the purchase. The packaging for this season is different than the formats used for previous seasons, with this season’s packaging consisting of an outer box that houses 3 slim plastic DVD cases. Each case holds 2 discs and features a large photo of an angel on the cover, episode titles, descriptions and airdates on the back, and several photos of the angels and Bosley on the inside. Of all 3 season DVD releases, I believe this one has the best packaging. The film restoration is excellent, as the episodes look and sound great! My only complaint about the set is that the 2 double-length episodes, “Angels in Vegas” and “Terror on Skis,” are the syndicated versions that are each split up into 2-part episodes. It would be nice to have the rarely seen, unedited, original versions of these episodes.

I love the Angels, through thick and thin, and even though this season has its flaws, I’m thrilled to add it to my Angel DVD collection. It’s just a shame that a season that could have been spectacular as a whole was instead lackluster.

Season 3: 4 stars

Season 3 DVD set: 4 stars

Once upon a time, three little girls went to the police academy. and they were each assigned very hazardous duties, but I took them all away from all that and now they work for me. My name is Charlie. Those famous words started the all time greatest TV show in history Charlie’s Angels. When the pilot aired in March of 1976, it starred Farrah Fawcett Majors as Jill who was the athletic angel, Jaclyn Smith as Kelly who was the streetwise angel, Kate Jackson as Sabrina who was the cool smart, multilingual leader, David Doyle as John Bosley, David Ogden Stiers as Scott Woodville and John Forsythe as the voice of Charlie. The original concept of the Angels was to have one brunette, one red-head, and one blonde. Kate Jackson was aboard from the beginning of the project, and was set to play the lead angel. Farrah Fawcett was the next to join; filling the blonde role, but then the producers dropped the hair color concept and brought in Jaclyn Smith to complete the trio. The pilot for the 1976-1981 TV series focuses on the Angels’ very first case. When a wealthy winegrower disappears, the three private investigators go undercover at the vineyard to track down the whereabouts of the body. Many of the scenes used in the opening credits of the show are from this pilot episode. Then in the fall of September of 1976 ABC introduce the three stunning, sexy and young former policewoman, private detectives working for the Charles Townsend Detective Agency with the entire crew back except David Ogden Stiers. In the opening sequence of the first season, the city where the Angels attended the police academy was never mentioned. The wealthy Charlie Townsend, their never-seen boss, relayed assignments via a speaker telephone. The Angels worked with their trusty male counter-part, John Bosley. It wasn’t until the next season that we found out where the various Angels got their police training. After only 23 episodes, Farrah left the show at the end of the first season. When Farrah Fawcett left the series, her absence was explained by having her character Jill become a professional racing driver on the NASCAR circuit. Along with a new Angel, the show received a new time slot. The Angels remained on Wednesday nights, but moved from 10pm to 9pm. This change in time opened up a whole world of new viewers who wanted to know what the big fuss was all about and kept the “Angels” right where they belong - on top of the ratings! Kris was introduced in the second season opening two part series titled Angels in Paradise. The 1977-1978 season ended with high ratings, proved that Kris, Cheryl Ladd, was every bit as popular with the viewers as Farrah. The third year was the only season that there were no cast changes. It was also the second season when we found out that where the Angels graduate from the police academy. Jill, Kelly and Sabrina were all former members of the Los Angeles Police Department. Kris went to the police academy in San Francisco. In the 1979-1980 season, the answer came with Shelley Hack, a model who had been prominent in Revlon’s “Charlie” Perfume ads and commercials. Shelley entered The Townsend Office as Tiffany Welles, an Ivy League scholar who also was a graduate from the Boston Police Academy. Spelling and Goldberg had the idea that with this new Angel/model at the helm, she could bring an elegant and classy touch to Charlie’s trio! Kate Jackson’’s absence was explained by having Sabrina getting married and starting a family. Shelley Hack who graduated from the police academy and worked as a police officer in Boston replaced Sabrina. The writers treaded lightly as they tried to figure out how to make Tiffany Welles the new “Sabrina Duncan”. The 1979-1980 seasons’ problem was the sudden decline in ratings. The series found itself in the top 20’s instead of the top 10 were it had been for the last three years. The ratings drop was directed at the new Angel and at the end of the season, Shelley was let go of her detective duties. Thus, beginning, another hunt for a new Angel! By 1980, Charlie’s Angels was beginning to feel its age and was declining fast. Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg wanted to go with a fresh new image. After careful consideration, they decided to hire virtually unknown actress, Tanya Roberts. This time around, the character would be a model-turned-detective, street-smart Julie Rogers. The new Angel showed her face in the three-hour 1980-1981 season premiere on November 30, 1980. High hopes were placed on Charlie’s newest Angel to pull the series out its failing ratings. To help give it an added boost, the Angels were sent to Hawaii for the first six episodes. Hawaii wasn’t only chosen to intrigue the audience but to keep the Angels scantily clad in swimsuits! Charlie’s opening monologue has now undergone a complete overhaul. It begins, “Once upon a time, there were three beautiful girls. Two of them graduated from the police academy. The other graduated from a top school for models. And they each reaped the rewards of their exciting careers…” For her “reward,” Julie is shown jogging on a treadmill while promoting a drink called Joggerade. Kelly drives her third different identical Mustang of the series after the previous one was blown up in”Toni’s Boys”. Bosley looks over brochures of Hawaii in anticipation of the Angels’ possible assignment there. Charlie arranges for Julie to receive a probationary investigator’s license and begin working with Kris and Kelly. My all time favorite Charlie’s Angel show titled Waikiki Angels. The Angels are not pleased to learn that Bosley and Charlie have tried to arrange for them to teach a lifeguard course at a new hotel. Claiming that they need practice on their rescues, they throw Bosley into the pool. Unfortunately, at this point, the audience was no longer keeping up with the Angels antics. In February 1981, the show went on hiatus and wasn’t shown again until June of 1981. Charlie’s Angels was not winning any viewers in the summer of ‘81 with its remaining episodes. The show that had made women crime fighters popular during the 1970’s was taken off the air. Charlie’s Angels was a huge success the moment it hit the airwaves in 1976. The Angels were on gum cards, doll boxes, T-shirts, board games, puzzles and posters. They also graced the covers of Time magazine on November 22, 1976 and TV Guide on September 25, 1976. Charlie’s Angels has appeared on TV Guide Cover four times, Sept, 25, 1976; Jaclyn, Farrah and Kate, February 18, 1978; Jaclyn, Kate and Cheryl, December 29, 1979; Jaclyn, Cheryl and Shelley and the last on December 18, 1993; Kate, Farrah and Jaclyn. If you wanted to hire the Angels you had to call the office phone number was 555-0267. Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith) was the only Angel to last the entire series. Kelly was an orphan. John Forsythe’ was never on the set - his voice was recorded, and dubbed in later. The Angels all drove Ford automobiles. Jill (and later Kris) drove a Cobra, Kelly drove a Mustang, and Sabrina drove a Pinto. For the record, Bosley drove a Ford L.T.D. Although in most episodes Charlie was heard but never seen, he did actually appear in a couple of episodes, but his face was never shown. Kelly is the only Angel to have been shot throughout the run of the show. Sabrina was the only Angel that was previously married. She was married to a fellow officer when she was still a cop but the marriage ended in divorce.

Only Robert Redford’s 2nd directorial effort, this film is purely from the heart. This is a true ensemble piece, worthy of Altman, and Redford’s love of the land is quite appropriate. I was most impressed with the fact that this film is about Mexican/Native American types, and found no need for sex, drugs, blood or real violence (that stuff seems to prevail when regarding cultural differences). How refreshing. Foremost is the fact that this has a whimsical element of fantasy, and a quasi David/Goliath subtext. I was especially amused when the old man was playing chess with the Angel (a bit of Bergman, perhaps?). Aside from the gorgeous vistas of New Mexico, beautifully photographed, it is Dave Grusin’s Oscar-winning score that is most intriguing (it’s ONLY Oscar nomination). The lovely guitar of Angel Romero is prevalent throughout, adding to Grusin’s 5/8 time with endless modulations, suggesting that this is a land that will go on forever. The acting is wonderful, without exception. The previous reviewers have all failed to mention how strong Chick Vennera was in the lead role. So very handsome, and so un-self-conscious. A wonderful performance. If there would be a second lead, it would have to be Carlos Riquelme as the old geezer that everyone thinks is nuts, but actually talks to Angels. Sonia Braga, John Heard, Daniel Stern, Nancy Mandragon, and especially, James Gammon, were all solid. I love this film a lot, because it really makes me feel good. And that music…it stays with you. Quite haunting. I recommend this film for families; no matter how poor you might be, financially, standing up for yourself and your integrity can make you rich beyond your wildest dreams.

Charming, feel good, witty, captivating, intriguing, delightful. These are just a few of the ways to describe this wonderful film. And that’s just the story. The acting, the music, the direction and cinematography will all grab you from the first frame and not let go of you until the last, at which point you will wish there was more.

Milagro, New Mexico. Elev. 8400. A small and close knit town of families and friends, living and working together in hopes that someday they may actually pay off the balance on that washing machine(that doesn’t work anyway). Jose (Chick Vennera) tries desperatly to get work with the new land development company that has just moved in on the town. There’s going to be a golf course and beautiful homes built soon. No luck though, they will not hire the locals for these new jobs. Angered and frustrated, Jose takes a kick at the fixture that now blocks any water flow onto his land..oops…must of kicked something loose, water is now flowing(illegally) into his dried up beanfield, his once livelihood. He should really turn it off, shouldn’t he? But he doesn’t..and so it begins…”The Milagro Beanfield War”. The poor townspeople must decide whether to take a stand together against the rich and powerful land developers. “Milagro” means miracle…just what this town will need!

The characters in this town will steal your heart, and have you rooting for them throughout the film. The fiesty Sonia Braga, who is Ruby the auto mechanic tries to work the apathetic town into standing up to what’s right for them. Ruben Blades is marvelous as the town sherriff, caught between his loyalty and the law. A mesmerizning Carlos Riquelme is “Amarante”, the elder of the town who is able to talk to and get advice from a delightful angel, and you won’t want to miss one word of the conversations. Rounding the cast out nicely is John Heard, Daniel Stern, James Gammon, Melanie Griffith, and Christopher Walken, who adds his special touches as well.

Beautifully directed(as always) by Robert Redford, with a well deserved Academy Award winning score by Dave Grusin, one that really fits the mood of this film, and a story and characters you can really feel for, this is a not to be missed film.

Universal…PUHLEESE!….My tape is nearly worn out…A DVD of this film soon! Thanks.

Enjoy…Laurie
